"Should I grade this or just sell it raw?" is the single most common question in Pokemon reselling right now, and the honest answer in 2026 is: it depends on the card, and the math has changed. Grading used to be close to a default move. Now it's a case-by-case call.
The Old Assumption Is Breaking Down
For years, the play was simple — buy raw, submit, sell graded, pocket the spread. That worked when grading fees were low and the PSA 9 premium was wide and reliable. With PSA's 2026 fee increases pushing bulk submissions up roughly $6 a card, that spread has narrowed for a lot of common and mid-tier cards. In some cases, buying an already-graded PSA 9 outright costs about the same as buying the raw card and paying to grade it yourself.
When Raw Still Wins

High-grade vintage WOTC-era holos are the clearest case for grading right now — that segment has held or grown even as mid-grade vintage softened. Chase cards and modern short-prints with strong collector demand also tend to keep a real graded premium, since buyers specifically want the third-party guarantee before paying top dollar. If the card is scarce in true gem-mint condition, grading still pays.
Run the Numbers Before You Choose
Before grading anything, price three things side by side: the raw card's current sold price, the PSA 9 sold price for that exact card, and PSA's current fee at your submission tier plus shipping both ways. If the graded price minus fees is barely above the raw price, sell raw and move on.
